Getting Out (of this Town)

Before the malls came
To Ritchie Highway
We cruised Cameros
A sweet ride
Went to the diner
Where Doris served us
In her beehive
Tall and wide

As I sat there
At the counter
I thought of places
Not yet seen
I could not stay
In a town where
Nothing more
Had ever been

I’m getting out
Of this town
There’s more to life
Than a wedding gown

Said my counselor
At my high school
No one ever leaves this town
You will stay here
Find a good job
Then get married
And settle down

As I sat there
In his office
No I’m not
Is what I thought
This is not where
I was meant to
I’m getting out
Before I’m caught

I’m getting out
Of this town
There’s more to life than
A cap and gown

No more ranches
Or split levels
I’ll leave the boxes
With lawns so green
I want to see
The other places
That lie beyond
The wizard’s screen

There’s Chicago
The Big Apple
Paris France
And London too
There’s more to history
Than the Navy
I want to learn
The why’s and who’s

I’m getting out
Of this town
A running start
Can’t slow me down

When I got out
Of the town
A world of treasures
I had found
Then I moved to
Another small town
I got married
And settled down
